Mohimohi Moana Master Scholarship 2024, Natalie Taufa

A valued team member of the Mohimohi Moana rangahau research team is our University of Waikato Master student, Natalie Taufa. Natalie’s research is investigating what benthic species reside within our seabed and ocean waters to complete her master thesis with the support of Mohimohi Moana.

Just like in a garden bed, our seabed has important species such as our colourful and nutrient rich seaweeds that act like compost. Paua and limpets are our resident lawnmowers, moving along our reef keeping small organisms under control. Our benthic feeding fish have a vital role of overturning our garden bed/sea floor.

Through environmental monitoring, eDNA and stable isotope technology, we will be able to gather information on the current food webs and interactions between species. These results combined with historical knowledge and mātauranga, will help us understand changes to biodiversity over the decades and inform possible effects of climate change.
