Freshwater & Harbor Restoration

About

What Is the Freshwater & Harbour Restoration Project?

At Mohimohi Moana, we know that healing the ocean starts upstream. Our restoration work focuses on both the Punaruku Awa (river) and the Whangaruru Harbour — two lifelines of our local ecosystem. These waters feed the moana, nourish our kaimoana, and connect our communities. Through hands-on efforts like clean-ups, replanting, and species reintroduction, we’re bringing these places back to life.

What we do

How It Works

Our restoration efforts are powered by community. Volunteers of all ages are rolling up their sleeves to clean, replant, and regenerate our waterways.

  • Punaruku Awa Project – Freshwater: This community-led effort focuses on cleaning up the Punaruku Awa through volunteer clean-up days, removing invasive species and blockages, and launching riparian planting to restore natural buffers. This work aims to reconnect people to the river through active care and presence.
  • Whangaruru Harbour Restoration Project – Saltwater: We’re reviving intertidal zones by reintroducing native shellfish species like Tio (Saccostrea glomerata), Tuangi (Austrovenus stutchburyi), and Pipi (Paphies australis). This includes monitoring water quality and biodiversity to transform the harbour into a thriving, self-sustaining kaimoana habitat.

Why It Matters

  • Heal Ecosystems to support clean, thriving waterways.
  • Strengthen Food Systems by restoring marine life and habitat.
  • Reconnect to Kaitiakitanga and our role as guardians of land and sea.
