What we do
How It Works
This research is grounded in Kaupapa Hapū, which is a method built by, for, and with hapū. Every step respects tikanga Māori, and centers the voices, values, and leadership of the local community. Our approach includes:
- Wānanga (Knowledge Gatherings): Interactive community sessions focused on taonga species, marine ecosystems, and historical stewardship.
- Kōrero with Elders: Deep listening with kaumātua and kuia who carry the language, memory, and insight of our ancestors.
- Engaging Women & Rangatahi: Actively including wāhine and youth to ensure intergenerational learning and leadership.
- Story Collection: Capturing oral histories, place-based practices, and experiences from those who have lived in close relationship with the ocean.
- Archival & Secondary Research: Complementing lived knowledge with written records and historical research.
Why It Matters
- Restore Ecosystems through ancestral knowledge.
- Build Resilience to climate and marine threats.
- Reclaim Identity by reviving whakapapa and rangatiratanga.
