Pest, Weed and Riparian Project

About
What Is the Pest, Weed & Riparian Restoration Project?
To restore our ecosystems, we must remove what harms them, and plant what heals. Mohimohi Moana supports local initiatives to eliminate invasive pests and weeds while also beginning a crucial new effort: riparian planting across Whangaruru. Together, these actions protect the ngahere, clean our waterways, and create conditions for life to return.

What we do
How It Works
We work alongside local landowners, volunteers, and neighbouring communities to carry out targeted eradication efforts — guided by mātauranga and ecological science.
- Russell State Forest & Surrounding Lands: We’re removing invasive pests like possums, Seika deer, wild pigs, cattle, goats, and cats — working across landowner boundaries to restore full ecosystem balance and protect native flora and fauna.
- Punaruku Awa Weed Eradication Program: By clearing noxious weeds from riverbanks and replacing them with native vegetation, we’re strengthening the health of the awa, stabilizing its banks, and restoring vital habitats.
- Whangaruru Riparian Planting (New Initiative): We’re mobilizing funding and community support to help local landowners plant native species along waterways, creating natural filters for runoff, restoring habitats, and improving freshwater health.
Why It Matters
- Replant What Was Lost to restore native plant systems that protect land and water.
- Clean Waterways & Reduce Erosion through riparian planting and natural filtration.
- Build Living Buffers between whenua and moana to support future generations.
