About
What Is the Mohimohi Moana Education Program?
Our education program brings the ocean to life for tamariki and rangatahi — through hands-on learning rooted in connection, safety, and curiosity. From snorkeling to marine science, these experiences are designed to grow the next generation of kaitiaki (guardians) by sparking wonder and building confidence in and around the moana.

What we do
How It Works
Delivered in schools, marae, and on the coastline, our mobile and accessible program includes:
- Water Safety Course (4 hours | Ages 8–12) - Teaching essential skills for being safe around, in, and on the water — empowering tamariki to build confidence and awareness from a young age.
- Snorkeling Course (4 hours | Ages 8–12) - Introducing kids to the magic beneath the surface through basic snorkeling techniques and marine exploration, always under expert guidance.
- Mohimohi Moana Mobile Marine Science Hub (2–4 hours) - A traveling learning lab that brings marine science directly to communities. Participants engage with marine life, learn about local ecosystems, and discover the interconnectedness of moana, whenua, and people.
Why It Matters
- Build Early Connection through access, confidence, and belonging in the ocean.
- Make Learning Fun with science, storytelling, and safety at the core.
- Grow Future Guardians who feel pride in their role and responsibility to protect the moana.

Did you know?
We’ve also written children’s books about taking care of the ocean.
At Mohimohi Moana, we believe learning starts young. That’s why we’ve created storybooks designed to help tamariki connect with the moana through play, language, and curiosity.
- He Pūrākau Kina mō ngā Tamariki shares the story of kina (urchins) and their role in our marine world, while Tāngata Nunui Tāngata Nohinohi teaches tamariki about sustainable seafood harvesting.
- These books spark imagination and build a sense of guardianship from an early age — helping our youngest ocean protectors grow with knowledge and care.
